I’ve Been Caught

Grayson and I just celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary about a week ago 😉  In true us fashion, we celebrated with a night out to dinner followed by a fun bar hop.  We had such a fun weekend and I’ve been dying to share it with you all!

Let’s rewind a little to the night we got engaged.  I had just moved into a new apartment two days before.  Grayson and a couple of his friends generously helped me move all my belongings into my new room of a three bedroom apartment on the third floor.  Good friends, right?  I was busy in my new room organizing clothes and accessories in my new-to-me closet when my phone rang.

“Let’s go to dinner,” his cool and calm voice suggested.  Count me in…you don’t have to tell me twice.  I told him to call me when he arrived and I would just run down so he didn’t have to climb those three flights of stairs again.

He arrived and came up anyway, such a gentleman.  Riding toward downtown, we began gabbing about what we should eat.  I couldn’t really think of anything in particular.  He ended up parking and suggested we just walk around until something struck our fancy.  I should have known what was coming because that is so out of character.  But I didn’t…

We started walking, and next thing I know, we are on the corner of Market and Front Street downtown under the yellow glow of a street light.  Before I knew it, he was on one knee asking the question I had longed to hear for many, many years.  I said yes, I squealed, and we both celebrated our excitement!  He then informs me we are going to my favorite restaurant at the time.  He had made reservations to celebrate the occasion.

Way back when, there was a phenomenal restaurant called Deluxe located in downtown Wilmington.  I had never tasted such amazing food and before I knew it I was googling to find out who the chef was.  I just had to know!  Enter Chef Keith Rhodes.  Such amazing talent that it literally blows my mind.  A couple years later after dining there numerous times, Deluxe closed and literally broke my heart.

Fast forward to the present.  Chef Rhodes now has a restaurant in town called Catch, a modern seafood restaurant featuring fresh seafood. We’ve been a couple times before and our meals have always been top notch, but this occasion was over the top.

We get there and are greeted by this sign out front which just makes me giggle 🙂  Catch is located in a strip mall, but don’t let the facade fool you.


We were quickly seated and ordered cocktails to celebrate.  I ordered a cucumber margarita which was cool and refreshing.  I like tequila and it sounded like a good starter drink for the occasion 😉  Grayson when with his usual go-to: an old fashioned.  Both were wonderful!

We started our meal with bread and a savory pesto dipping sauce.  There is nothing bad I can ever say about pesto.  Ever.

After a few sips of our cocktails, our waitress took our appetizer order.  We ordered an appetizer special named Dirty South Oysters.  Oysters on the half shell, grilled and topped with kale, pimento cheese, bacon, and gremolata (lemon zest and parsley).  Sweet Mother of the Lord…these were so savory.  The charred grill flavor in addition to the sweetness of the pimento cheese and the saltiness of the oyster couldn’t have gone better together.  It is a flavor we’ve been trying to find since we vacationed in NOLA last year and have had zero luck.  SO THANKFUL we found these!

We hadn’t planned on having a salad, but our waitress did a great job of talking us into one in particular.  I’m so glad she did!  A spinach salad topped with NC sweet potatoes, goat cheese, and Lewis Farm’s fresh strawberries.  PLEASE get this when you go.  You will deeply regret it if you don’t.  I never knew a salad could taste so delicious!


We both ordered specials for our entree.  I ordered Uncle Phil’s Soft Shell Crabs.  They were very lightly breaded, deep fried, and beautifully set on top of she-crab grits, kale, and pickled leeks with a bacon dressing.  The crab was crisp on the outside but so soft and moist in the center.  And the leeks…oh the leeks.  Such amazing flavor that ran all over the grits.  It was one of the best meals ever.


At least I thought so…until I tried Grayson’s meal.

A whole lobster, shucked for you so you don’t have to work for it :p, grilled and sauteed in a sweet and spicy Asian sauce and served with fried rice.  Y’all, I don’t even know how to describe this dish.  I was sending pictures of it to friends as soon as I tasted it raving about how amazing it was.  According to our waitress, this dish is what Catch is known for.  I had entree envy for sure.  I want to go back and get this dish as soon as I can.  It was the best lobster I’ve ever tasted.


Lastly, our dessert was the cherry on top of the most perfect meal and date night!  We ordered a warm chocolate bundt cake topped with homemade salted caramel ice cream complete with a candle for our anniversary celebration!  Sweet hubs doesn’t typically care for chocolate cake type desserts, but he was intrigued by the ice cream.  We were both most pleased with our meal!


As we sat discussing how wonderful everything was, we decided we should check out a couple bars downtown to continue the festivities.  Stay tuned for the shenanigans we got into 😉

  1. OMG I am going to go to Catch and mimic your meal! I know it was delicious. I have had the FABULOUS lobster dish before so I will probably try the soft shell crab (which I have been craving). Chef Rhodes is AWESOME!!
